It can be installed on any ordinary PC or Mac. When these computers "sleep", the screen saver comes on and the computers communicate with each other by the internet to share the work of creating morphing abstract animations known as "sheep". The result is a collective "android dream", an homage to Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. Anyone watching one of these computers may vote for their favorite animations using the keyboard. The more popular sheep live longer and reproduce according to a genetic algorithm with mutation and cross-over.

It uses a fully realized three-dimensional graphics engine to evolve a wide variety of themes over time, producing innovative and original visual effects that are absolutely stunning. The program includes twenty-two unique themes. When active, Maelstrom randomly cycles through all selected themes, smoothly transitioning between them, often with breathtaking results. Variety is built in, and the result is that you won't end up watching exactly the same things over and over. Select a checkbox, and all themes will be rendered in red/blue anaglyphic 3D mode. You'll be impressed with this program's output, which goes far beyond the Mandelbrot and Julia sets you normally see in many similar apps. You can run the program two ways: as a screen saver or as a typical windowed program with pull-down menus for adjusting its plethora of options.
